Foreign Language Evaluations 2026-2027 Cycle

Foreign Language Evaluations (FLEs)

Language requirements vary by country, so please review the specific language proficiency requirements of your selected award. For programs where language skills are required, you must complete the Language Self Evaluation form within the application and register an individual to complete the FLE form Download FLE form. The FLE should be completed by a professional language teacher, preferably a university professor.

For programs where languages skills are recommended or not required, if you have some language skills relevant to the host country or proposed project, you should complete the Language Self Evaluation and submit a Foreign Language Evaluation Form. It helps to document your language ability, even if it is not required for the award. Even if a country indicates that English will be sufficient for carrying out the proposed project, you'll want to develop at least a basic level of skill in the local language to better engage with your host community.

Options for requesting the FLE:

Once you have found someone to complete the FLE, please provide them with the Instructions for Foreign Language Evaluators Links to an external site..

For programs in countries where English is one of the national languages, or where your foreign language proficiency is not relevant to the work you propose (e.g. you speak Italian and hope to teach in South Korea with Fulbright) you do not need to submit any foreign language forms.

If you want the same person to complete both a recommendation and an FLE, you need to register the person once for the recommendation and once for the FFLE. Please ensure that your evaluator/recommender have received the correct forms.
